Why Have an Agent?

Discussion regarding the importance of having a champion for your art and your career. Beginning with an introduction to The Rights Factory and her role as an associate literary agent, Natasha will speak to why she and her colleagues do what they do. What is the role of an agent, from the agent’s perspective, and why are they useful in an author’s journey? Are they necessary? For the heart of her session, Natasha will discuss, from her experience, what the process looks like from the other side of the curtain—from receiving a query, to studying a manuscript, what it takes to offer representation to a writer, and what comes next. How does she go about pitching editors? What is the relationship between agent and editor, or author and agent and editor? How important are relationships in the publishing industry? Natasha will speak about rejection, perseverance, and possibility. Ultimately, this session is about learning to understand publishing as a journey, and realizing the potential of your agent as your champion through it.
