In the ninety-two years since Askew’s modest entry into serving the community, the world has faced a multitude of threats and challenges. This past year, though, has been uniquely difficult for many people. During these times of great uncertainty, we looked to Askew’s core values as a guide — and we remained committed to taking care of each other and our community. In a time of exceptional strain for those around us, it has been gratifying to see our people continuing to serve those in our community.

We know that many people and sectors have been affected differently this past year, including the cultural and creative sectors. The arts bring people together by inspiring, sharing, and bringing thoughts together, even from a distance. Of all the necessities we now feel so keenly aware of, the arts and their contribution to our well-being have become very evident and perhaps even more central in our lives. Sharing in the written form, through messages, letters, and stories, has become even more important with the physical distance we’ve experienced this past year. Askew’s continues to remain committed to supporting the rich arts and creative community in Salmon Arm. We are pleased to continue to support the Askew’s Word on the Lake Writing Contest, and the writers who participate.
